Yesterday, We saw that the objectivity of Art leads to some absurd conclusions. Right ??? It would seem that it must be the case that Art is subjective. Philosophy is not so easy however. Consider the following proposition:
If you walked into a classroom in college and asked all the men in there if C was true or false, the response that U would most likely recieve is True, and this response would probably be unanimous. In a similar situation, if a group of Asian Indians are asked if they think that the Taj Mahal is beautiful, they would respond "Yes". These are not the sort of responses that we would expect if art were subjective. If Art were subjective, we would expect varied responses among the polled group, not an unanimous response. Incidentally, I've been persecuted for my belief that the Taj is ugly. |
